Toni Morrison's 1987 novel, inspired in part by the true story of Margaret Garner, is a searing meditation on slavery's long aftermath, on the costs of survival, and on the ways in which a mother's love can become both a refuge and a weapon. Lyrical, fragmented, and unflinching, Beloved earned Morrison the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was central to the Nobel Committee's citation when she became the first Black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
