In a near-future America where owning books is a crime, firemen no longer put out fires; they start them, burning any printed matter they find. Guy Montag is one such fireman, proud of his work and numb to the shallow, screen-saturated society around him. When a chance meeting with a curious teenage neighbor and a disturbing house call shake his certainty, Montag begins to hide books rather than burn them and to question the regime he has served. Ray Bradbury's landmark 1953 novel, titled for the temperature at which paper ignites, is a stark parable about censorship, mass media, and the seductive comfort of not thinking. Short, lyrical, and burning with moral urgency, Fahrenheit 451 imagines a culture that has traded literature for spectacle and conformity for peace, and asks what it would take for a single reader to remember what was lost. It remains one of the most widely taught and frequently cited dystopian novels of the twentieth century.
