A ship trapped in the polar ice rescues a gaunt, haunted man from the surrounding wasteland, and as the stranger regains his strength he begins to tell the captain an almost unbelievable story. His name is Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist from Geneva who, driven by grief and ambition, assembled a human form from dead tissue and gave it life, only to recoil in horror from what he had made. Abandoned and despised, the creature learned to speak and feel alone in the wild and has returned to demand either companionship or revenge. Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, begun as a ghost-story challenge on the shores of Lake Geneva when she was eighteen, is a foundational work of modern science fiction and Gothic literature. Through its nested narratives of creator, creature, and witness, Frankenstein asks how far human knowledge may go without moral responsibility, what is owed to the beings we bring into the world, and how loneliness can curdle into violence. Few novels have shaped the imagination of the last two centuries more.
