Working alongside him, reluctantly, is Lisbeth Salander, a young, pierced, photographically gifted hacker with a state file thick enough to bury a lesser person and her own score to settle with the men who have abused her. As their investigation forces open a vault of family secrets, financial corruption, and Nazi-era history, the two unlikely partners draw the attention of people who would very much prefer that vault to stay closed. Stieg Larsson's posthumously published 2005 thriller opened the Millennium trilogy and became a global phenomenon, widely credited with carrying Nordic noir into the mainstream. Cold-blooded in its procedural detail and unflinching in its portrait of violence against women, the novel is both a taut mystery and a furious indictment of the institutions that look the other way.
