On an ordinary Thursday morning, Arthur Dent lies down in front of a bulldozer to stop his house from being demolished and is, minutes later, rescued from Earth moments before the entire planet is demolished to make way for an interstellar bypass. His rescuer, Ford Prefect, turns out to be an alien researcher for a celebrated electronic travel guide, and the two of them hitch a ride across the galaxy into a universe of paranoid androids, improbable starships, and bureaucratic aliens obsessed with doing everything by the book. Douglas Adams's 1979 novel, adapted from his BBC radio series, is one of the most quoted works of British comic science fiction, a cheerfully absurd survey of life, the universe, and whether anyone remembered to bring a towel. Under the jokes lies a genuine affection for the small, confused creatures trying to make sense of an indifferent cosmos and a biting skepticism of the systems they invent to pretend they understand it. Short, quotable, and joyfully strange, it launched a five-book trilogy and a permanent place in popular culture.

“Orion's 'rich, clear, and authoritative' British voice offers a deep base that can be flattened for Marvin's characteristic monotone and sarcasm.”
