J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel began as a story for his children and grew into the gateway of one of the most influential fictional worlds ever created. By turns funny, frightening, and quietly philosophical, The Hobbit introduces characters, languages, and landscapes that Tolkien would later expand in The Lord of the Rings, and it remains one of the most beloved fantasy novels ever written.
