FBI trainee Clarice Starling is pulled out of Quantico and sent to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant forensic psychiatrist and imprisoned cannibalistic murderer, in the hope that his insight might help catch a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill. Bill is abducting young women and skinning his victims, and a senator's daughter has just disappeared, putting the investigation on an unforgiving clock. What begins as a single interview becomes a dangerous game of exchange, as Lecter offers Starling clues about the killer only in return for fragments of her own painful past. Thomas Harris's 1988 thriller is widely regarded as one of the definitive works of modern crime fiction, blending meticulously researched forensic procedure with an unnerving character study of predator and investigator. The novel's portrayal of a young woman navigating a male-dominated bureau, of a killer shaped by trauma, and of a mind more frightening behind glass than any at large, set a template that the genre is still working through. The 1991 film adaptation won the Big Five Academy Awards and cemented the story's place in popular culture.
